Why does a small business need a website in 2026?

Most customers look a business up before they ring it, even when someone has recommended it. What they find decides whether they call. Here is what a website does for a small business now, what it does not do, and the minimum it needs to cover.

People check before they call

A recommendation used to be enough. Now the person who was recommended types your name into Google before they pick up the phone. They are checking three things: that you are real, that you do what they need, and that you cover where they are.

If what they find is a Facebook page last updated a year ago, or nothing at all, some of them ring the next name instead. A website answers those three questions in the few seconds they will give it.

Your Google Business Profile works better with a website behind it

Your Google Business Profile is what appears on the map and in the panel beside the search results. It is free and every local business should have one. It has a field for your website, and the profile is stronger when that link points to a site showing the same name, address, phone number and services.

Google looks at whether your details match across the web when deciding how much to trust a listing. A profile with no website behind it has less to be checked against.

AI assistants need something to read

More people now ask ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or Perplexity for a recommendation instead of searching. When those assistants look things up, they read web pages they can reach and quote from them. A clear website that says what you do, where, and roughly what it costs gives them something to work with. Much of a Facebook page sits behind a login they cannot get past.

Nobody can guarantee an AI assistant will recommend you, and anyone who promises it is guessing. But a business with no website gives them nothing to go on. Our Business Websites page covers the AI Search Optimisation work we do for clients.

It is the one thing you actually own

Your Facebook page, your directory listings and your profile on a trade site all belong to someone else, who can change the rules whenever they like. A website on a domain registered in your name is yours.

The same domain gives you email addresses like you@yourbusiness.co.uk instead of a Gmail or Hotmail address. We cover why that matters in business email on your own domain.

It saves time on the phone

Prices, the area you cover, your hours, what you do and what you do not do. If those are on your website, the calls you get are from people who already know you are a fit. If they are not, you answer the same questions all day.

What a website will not do

A website on its own does not bring in work. Nobody finds a brand new site by accident, and nobody can promise you a place on the first page of Google. What it does is make sure that when someone looks you up, from a recommendation, a van, a business card or a search, they find something that makes them call.

If all your work comes from people who already know you and you are fully booked, you may not need one yet. We wrote a separate guide on exactly that: do I need a website if I have a Facebook page?

The minimum a small business website needs

All of that fits on one page. Most small businesses do not need ten.

What it costs

A one-page website from Klariq is a fixed £350. We write it, build it and put it live on your own domain, usually within a week. Care plans covering hosting, backups, security updates and monitoring start at £15 a month. Klariq is not VAT registered, so no VAT is added.

Common questions

Does a small business really need a website?

Most do. People look a business up before they call, even after a recommendation, and a website is how they check you are real, do what they need and cover their area. If all your work comes from people who already know you and you are fully booked, you may not need one yet.

Will a website get me on the first page of Google?

Not on its own, and nobody can promise that. A clear, well-built site and a Google Business Profile with matching details give you a far better chance of showing in local searches than having no site at all.

Do I need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

The profile is free and worth having, but it is stronger with a website behind it. The website is where customers and search engines confirm your services, your area and your contact details.
